Dance - Daniel Yeung
Music - Edmund Leung
As part of th I-Dance(Hong Kong) 2009 festival in Hong Kong, Yumi is performed a
solo work Sakasama: the reverse world.
The two worlds of Life and Death are described as two shores; one is ethe near shoref (the world of the living), and the other is 'ethe far shore' (the world of after-death). A river flows between them. 'The far shore' is a reversed world: it is the reverse of the world of the living and everything is upside down. Umiumare explores the juxtaposition of her presence in Australia, experimenting with the neutrality of emotion and color, and to manipulate rhythms.

 EN TRANCE
|
|
From her many performances of The Burlesque Hour around the globe, to Malthouse Theatre’s very own presentation of DasShoku Hora!!, Yumi Umiumare’s electrifying performance style is in demand the world over.
In this bold new work, Umiumare is set to detonate her extraordinary vision from the international to the other-worldy as she thrusts us into the twisted corridors of the un-living. At times brutally visceral, the performance is counterbalanced with the purity of digital painting produced live with her collaborating artists, Bambang Nurcahyadi and Naomi Ota.
EnTrance extends even further Umiumare’s diverse dance vocabulary, plummeting into the cracks where the spirit and the body are propelled into another existence. Umiumare takes us from unsettling moments of physical extremity to magical images of reflective serenity. |

Salon de Dance & The Feast of Argentina
a double bill of wild delight!
11-29 MARCH
LA MAMA THEATRE
Acclaimed the house of Finucane & Smith (The Burlesque Hour, Gotharama) take over La Mama for three weeks in March, plunging audiences into two extraordinary Salons. Nightly into the dark and decrepit dance hall of The Salon de Dance – a mesmerising physical exhibition dipped in the moody lights of the noir and the gothic; and on weekends. The Salon & The Feast burst at the seams with the unique and the intriguing.
“The most shocking dance I’ve ever seen in my life…how incredible is this banquet that the two create with their strange movement. I found myself laughing without any sound.”
NAGIGNON DANCE, OSAKA
“In tales of romantic adventure that grow ever more bizarre and bloodcurdling in their imagery, Finucane is utterly enthralling … a sensory onslaught like no other”
THE AUSTRALIAN
Salon de Dance
Whirl into Finucane & Smith’s decrepit dark dance hall: a wild mix of gothic dance, contemporary turns, tea dancing for hire and sultry chanteusery. Featuring the goddess of dark butoh dementia Yumi Umiumare and Mistress of Grand Guignol Moira Finucane as two demented sisters settling down to the business of supper in the dance that had Japanese critics declaring “overwhelming…it was too powerful for me but I want to see them again!” (Dancecube Magazine, Osaka); the surreal chanteuse Maude Davey; luminous Sydney dancer Paul Cordeiro; the dynamite of acclaimed dancers Harriet Ritchie & Holly Durant; the mesmerising Miss Caroline Lee; and a host of guest danseurs and danseuses. The Salon de Dance is a dark den of truly extraordinary physical performance. Table seating, lightbulb swinging, liquor sipping, dance lessons during interval… you’d be a fool not to dress up.
the Feast of Argentina
The Feast of Argentina Gina Catalina brings together Moira Finucane’s outrageous adventuress and diva Argentina Gina Catalina – acclaimed throughout the world for her feats of daring, sensuality and fervour – with fairground icon and bon vivant KT Prescott to create a whirlwind of tales and tastes in the intimate surrounds of La Mama. Argentina Gina Catalina, perhaps Finucane’s most extraordinary and acclaimed story teller, takes the audience on a rampage through the four seasons, each accompanied by a delicious morsel plucked right from the eyes of her tales. From sizzling Opera Houses, to the alleys of Barcelona; from her childhood in the Arctic Circle worshipped by wolves, killer whales and bandidoes, to the mayhem of autumnal oceans surrounded by pirates and piranhas… The Feast is a wild and delicious manifestation of Argentina’s most death defying tales.
