ARISAIG RETREAT, YANDOIT

Butoh & Experiential Art
Summer Residential Workshop

心の眼 - Other Ways of Seeing

Leave the certainty of modernity behind and enter the wilderness inside you as we dive into the world of Japanese Butoh and new forms of experiential art making.
Over the course of the weekend we will traverse between movement, ritual and silence, inviting shifts in perspective that are felt with our whole being.

This popular residential workshop returns to Australia this summer where the established art of Butoh meets the experimental testing grounds of the future.

“To be liberated
dive toward doubt
with great eagerness
given to being surprised
or remain Ossified
A Safe Distance
from alive” - Maria Popova

About this Summer’s Workshop

This Summer the theme is 心の眼 - Other Ways of Seeing, where we learn to see with other eyes. Established Artist Yumi Umiumare teaches her acclaimed masterclass in Butoh alongside new methods of experiential art making for our times, developed alongside interdisciplinary artist and image-maker Vikk Shayen. Together they bring a combined half-century of practice.

Drawing on both traditional and contemporary methods, you are invited to explore new ways of being and to follow your own creative impulses and expression, discovering ways of being through the physical, poetic and philosophical worlds of Butoh and the art of seeing.

Across four days, Yumi Umiumare leads a deep exploration of the visible and invisible in Butoh, moving between inner and outer expression. She is joined by Vikk Shayen, who will lead a segment offering new ways of perception and how to see with your whole body. These are methods are designed to stay with you long after the workshop ends.

Who is the workshop for?

The workshop is open to people of all levels of experience and artistic disciplines. Physical movement in the studio and outside make up the core of the workshop but no prior knowledge or skills are necessary to participate.

About the residency

Staying on the land is part of the practice where we let nature set the pace - morning walks through ancient trees, training in the day outside and in the studio, campfires at night and sleeping under the stars.

The vegetarian food prepared onsite and eating as group is an integral part of the experience. Together we create a space to explore where movement, ritual and spirituality meet, fostering a deeper connection with ourselves, each other and the world around us.
