Residential workshop exploring the disciplines of Butoh and Body Weather
Led by Yumi Umiumare (Melbourne) & Frank van de Ven (Amsterdam)

On the Wimmera River, 15kms west of Horsham, our base will be a 130-acre site near Mt Arapiles with a variety of bush, scrub, sand dunes, open fields, river and elevated rock – allowing participants to experience and open up the senses to colour, texture, sound and shapes. Through the powerful combination of Butoh and Body Weather, Yumi and Frank will guide participants in creating movement and dance in response to landscape.

YUMI UMIUMARE is an established Butoh Dancer and choreographer. She has been creating her distinctive style of works over the last 20 years and her works are renowned for provoking visceral emotions and questioning cultural identity. The works have been seen in numerous festivals in dance, theatre and film productions throughout Australia, Japan, Europe, New Zealand, South East Asia and South America, and have received critical acclaim and garnered several Australian Green Room awards. As a choreographer, Yumi has worked with many socially engaged theatre projects in Australia with aboriginal communities, refugees, culturally diverse people and disability groups. Yumi was a recipient of the fellowship from Australian Council, through which she is exploring her popup tearoom series.
About Yumi

FRANK VAN DE VEN is a dancer and director who spent his formative years in Japan working with Min Tanaka and the Maijuku Performance Company (1983-92). In 1993, he founded with Katerina Bakatsaki Body Weather Amsterdam as a platform for training and performance. He has an ongoing commitment to his Body/Landscape series of workshops conducted worldwide and since 1995 he has led the annual, interdisciplinary Bohemiae Rosa Project with renowned Czech artist Milos Sejn, connecting body and landscape with art, geology and architecture. Body Weather was introduced in Australia by Tess de Quincey in 1989, see About Body Weather.

Weaving the Interior and exterior landscape

Yumi and Maria have known each other for nearly 20 years. They share a passion for dance and its transcendent and transformative qualities. They are like spiritual comrades and both have been exploring particular spiritual practice reflecting from their cultural and global identity through dance.

Maria is like the earth and water that is moved by the fire and air. She is seen by many who attend her workshops as a nurturing mother. In her teaching, she holds her students in their dance, enough for them to find their way, then sets them free. Whereas Yumi is like fire and air that is moved by the earth and water. As a kind of catalyst, Yumi also helps people to open up their new territories through her gentle provocation exercises. As Butoh originally called as ‘dance of darkness’, Yumi taps into the aspect of our shadow to unleash the unknown.

Their coming together in this 5 day Residential on Mt Batukaru, Bali, will be a beautiful blend of Female energy, as they bring together their magic from years of dance practice and performance to provide a rich, creative field for the participants to work in.

About Maria About Yumi

Embodied Dance Embodied Dance takes from many forms of somatic movement, expression and dance, weaving them into a deep visceral experience.　The work is informed by the natural way the body moves through, spirals, waves, circles and vibrations.

These energies are all present in the body system, like the earth and the universe. We are one flowing wave of energy. This is also expressed through traditional indigenous dances of the past, particularly by Egyptian dance. The dancer keeps coming back to the now, exploring her sensation, feelings and thought, bringing herself to a place of deep authenticity.

Butoh BU舞 means Dance, Toh 踏means stomping, Butoh is originally called Dance of Darkness and it was conceived in Japan during the social turmoil after the war. It was conceived by Tatsumi Hijikata as one of the most avant-garde arts movements started in late 50’s and early 60’s.

Yumi is taking the deep spiritual aspects of Butoh, for its transformative, ethereal and playful quality and explore our passive existence surrounded by our rich internal and external landscape.

マリアは火と風に動かされる、まるで大地と水。彼女のワークショップに参加した多くの人は、彼女を優しく包み込んでくれる母のように感じると言います。彼女の教え方は、それぞれの個性を生かしたダンスを、それぞれが発見できるように、そしてそれが自由にできるように導いてゆきます。

そして、ゆみは大地と水に動かされる、まるで火と風。ゆみも同じようにオープンに、また、 いわゆる「触媒」のように喚起をうながし、エクササイズを通し、 参加者が 新しい領域を自由に開いてゆけるように導いてゆきます。 もともと暗黒舞踏として始まった舞踏。ゆみの舞踏のセッションは、からだを通して、私たちの持つある種の闇とそれを照らす光、まだ見ぬ未知の世界が開放してゆけるように導いてゆきます。

このユニークな２人が共に行う５日間のバリ島、Batukaru山でのリトリートは、その自然溢れる場所で、優しく美しい女性的なエネルギーに満ちています。また長年のダンスとパフォーマンスの経験を持つ彼女たち２人独特のマジックにより、 クリエイティブで奥深いスペースが、参加者の皆さんと共に創られてゆくことでしょう 。

エンボディー・ダンス エンボディー・ダンスとは、様々な肉体の動きや表現やダンスの型を融合させたメソッドで、 深い感覚から踊りが感じられるように創られたものです。このワークの中では、渦をまく動き、波の動き、また、円を描き、振動の伝わるような動きなど、体にとってごく自然な動きから構成されます。まるで宇宙にある地球のように、私たちの体の器官の中には、さまざまなエネルギーが 存在します。 私たちの体の中には、一つのエネルギーの波が流れているものとも言えます。

エンボディー・ダンスは、過去の様々な伝統的なダンスや先住民的なダンス、特にエジプトのダンスの影響を受けております。踊り手たちは、自分たちが持つ 感覚、気持ちや、考え方を探りながら、それぞれの本来の姿に深く戻って行けるように、「いま目の前で起きていること」を探って行きます。

舞踏 もともと暗黒舞踏と呼ばれて始まった舞踏は、土方巽を中心に形成された前衛舞踊の様式で、 戦後５０年代、６０年代の社会的混乱の日本の中で生まれた、最も前衛芸術の一つといえます。ゆみの舞踏では、その深い精神性を探るのみならず、踊りの中でトランスしてゆく性質、またその不思議な空気感と遊びごごろを刺激してゆきます。からだを「受け身に」おくことで、からだの外的、内的風景を感じることができ、 そこから自然にわきおこってゆく踊りと、そのまわり にある空間を探ってゆきます。

誰でも舞踏！ こころの叫びに耳をすまし 見えないものに身をまかし わからない言葉でウジャグジャとつぶやいてみる そうすると知らないうちに、からだが動き出す からだの枠をはずして、動いて、叫んで、声出して、踊ってみる ついつい難しく考えられがちな舞踏 「 命がけで突っ立った死体」 として始まったのが６０年代の暗黒舞踏 でも、本当は、自分たちのからだの奥底にうごめいている 不思議な生き物を解き放って、闇と暗黒と明るくダンスできるのが舞踏 ずしっと響いてくるようで軽いノリ 訳ありのようで単純 ちょっと妙で、ちょっと不思議だけど、なんだかやたらと楽しくなってきてしまう 誰でも舞踏！ 泣いてもいい 笑ってもいい 感情をむき出しにしてもいい ほら！みんな動いて、飛んで、回転している 誰でも舞踏！

ードラム&ヴォイスー

人は太古から火を囲み、唄って踊ってきた。 ネイティブアメリカンドラムの音は心臓の音。 私たちが生まれてから死ぬまで、身体の中でずっと刻まれているビートを叩きながら、即興で声を出していく。 頭は分からないと言っても、身体はちゃんと唄うことを、踊ることを知っている。 唄い踊ることで人は大地と宇宙との繋がりを確かめてきた。 大地は私たちが唄い踊ることを一番楽しんでいる。 そして、唄うことで思い出す事がいっぱいあるんだよ。 この数百年の間に、私たちが忘れてしまったたくさんの大切な事を思い出す時間。 いのちの時間。 人間が唄い踊れば地球は大丈夫。そう大丈夫ーーーー！

eX...it! 2015 International Butoh exchange project- Germany

3-16 August 2015 at Schloss broellin, GermanyYumi was one of the 8 choreographers working with 75 participants and 6 live musicians coming from 27 different countries.‘eX...it!’ is the 5th international exchange dance festival since 1995, directed by Yumiko Yoshioka anddelta RA'i .

The festival is held every four years,and it is specifically designed for professional dancers of all disciplines who wish to work intensively with Butoh dance.

The aim of this workshop is to expand body awareness, deepen consciousness and unleash internal expression though a response to landscape. This 130 acre site near Mt Arapiles allows participants to move between bush-land, sand dunes, open fields, river and elevated rock, opening up the senses to color, texture, sound and form. Over the weekend, Yumi will introduce various methods of Butoh, Chi/Gravity exercises, breathing methods and encourage a fuller expression and consciousness of well-being.  The body practices and drawing will act as powerful counterpoints and as opportunities to filter one into the other, strengthening the links between the external environment and the internal landscape.Anthony will run a session of charcoal drawing that tap into this and the overall energetic build-up over the weekend.

YUMI UMIUMARE: Born in Hyogo, Japan, Yumi is the only Japanese Butoh Dancer in Australia and the creator of provocative Butoh Cabaret works. Originally a member of the seminal Butoh Company DaiRakudakan in Tokyo, she moved to Australia and in 1993. Over the last 20 years Yumi’s versatile and distinctive physical theatre works have been seen in the spectrum of dance, theatre and film productions and festivals throughout Australia, Japan, Europe, New Zealand and South Eastern Asia. Yumi teaches Butoh nationally and internationally.

ANTHONY PELCHEN: As a visual artist working across mediums, Anthony studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and has since presented work in Australia, Japan, Malaysia and Denmark. For over a decade he has periodically collaborated with Yumi Umiumare and Tony Yap and since 2010 has curated the Visual Arts program of the annual Melaka Art & Performance Festival, Malaysia.

The aim of this workshop is to expand body awareness, deepen consciousness and unleash internal expression though a response to landscape. This 130 acre site near Mt Arapiles allows participants to move between bush-land, sand dunes, open fields, river and elevated rock, opening up the senses to color, texture, sound and form. Over the weekend, Yumi will introduce various methods of Butoh, Chi/Gravity exercises, breathing methods and encourage a fuller expression and consciousness of well-being.  The body practices, voice work and drawing will act as powerful counterpoints and as opportunities to filter one into the other, strengthening the links between the external environment and the internal landscape.Kyoko (known as Earth Voice Kyoko) will share simple techniques for grounding body energy and connecting with the inner voice. Anthony will run a session of charcoal drawing that tap into this and the overall energetic build-up over the weekend. No dance, singing or drawing experience required

YUMI UMIUMARE: Born in Hyogo, Japan, Yumi is the only Japanese Butoh Dancer in Australia and the creator of provocative Butoh Cabaret works. Originally a member of the seminal Butoh Company DaiRakudakan in Tokyo, she moved to Australia and in 1993. Over the last 20 years Yumi’s versatile and distinctive physical theatre works have been seen in the spectrum of dance, theatre and film productions and festivals throughout Australia, Japan, Europe, New Zealand and South Eastern Asia. Yumi teaches Butoh nationally and internationally. KYOKO HIROBE: Kyoko is a native voice artist from Tokyo, touring Japan with several bands, singing in her deep soulful and powerful voice. In 2011 Kyoko performed with Yumi in Tokyo and joined Butoh residential workshop in Australian in 2012. A psychic healer and numerologist who has worked with over 8000 people in Japan, Kyoko has a love of volcanic mountains and the smell of souls. ANTHONY PELCHEN: As a visual artist working across mediums, Anthony studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and has since presented work in Australia, Japan, Malaysia and Denmark. For over a decade he has periodically collaborated with Yumi Umiumare and Tony Yap and since 2010 has curated the Visual Arts program of the annual Melaka Art & Performance Festival, Malaysia.

Workshop - Butoh Intensive March 2014

Wednesdays 5th – 26th March, 10am – 1.00pm, The course is open to all levels of experience.

Through the 4 week course, Yumi introduces the basic philosophy and physical exercises in Butoh and other dance discipline. Participants will explore:

在り方 Being -individual body presence 重力 Gravitating 感覚 Perceiving 空間 Spatial elements, both internal and external ため Accumulations, Isolation and sensation 間（ま）’Ma’ sense of emptiness, Active blankness, Active pause 記憶 Memory and Poetry 型/面 Form and Mask 摸写/ 反復 Copy and Repetition 想像/ 創造 Imagination to Creation

Through the practice, the participants will also create a short piece, exploring; Characterisation Provocation Transformation Tune in/Tune out Embrace the unknown

At the end of the workshops, we will have a informal gathering to show and tell about the work we create.

Let us dive into the dirt and sand dunes! This popular residential workshop is to expand our body awareness,deepen our consciousness and unleash our internal expressions through a response to landscape. This 140 acre site nearby to Mt Arapiles allows participants to move between bush land,sand dunes, open fields,river and elevated rock, opening up the senses to color,texture, sound and form.

Over the weekend, Yumi will introduce various exercises for “tuning” into our own links between the external environment and the internal landscape, focusing also breathing,exploring our deep expression and consciousness of well-being. The stillness of the landscape will let us explore the deeper and authentic part of our "being" and cleanse our busy thoughts.

There is a special charcoal drawing session will be run by a local visual artist Anthony Pelchen.

With Yumi UmiumareButoh Workshop The aim of this workshop on the Dee River, Yarra Valley was to develop body awareness and expression through a response to landscape. The lush landscape in Yarra Valley allows participants to move between bush land, hills, open fields and river, opening up the senses to color, texture, sound and form. Over the weekend, Yumi will introduce various methods of Butoh, Body Awareness and Consciousness of Well-being with various Japanese techniques. Butoh - Originating in Japan out of the turbulent protest culture of the early 1960's, Butoh has a literal translation of BU - dance TOH - stomping. Earlier named Ankoku Butoh (the Dance of Darkness), it is one of the major developments in contemporary dance in the latter half of the twentieth century.
