Butoh & Experiential Art
Summer Residential Workshop
Other Ways of Seeing
Leave the certainty of modernity behind and enter the wilderness inside you as we dive into the world of Japanese Butoh and new forms of experiential art making.
Over the course of the weekend we will traverse between movement, ritual and silence, inviting shifts in perspective that are felt with our whole being.
Excerpt from Butoh Residential WS 2019 @ Arisaig Wellness Restreat
“To be liberated
dive toward doubt
with great eagerness
given to being surprised
or remain ossified
a safe distance
from alive”
About the Workshop
This popular residential workshop returns to Australia this summer where the established art of Butoh meets the experimental testing grounds of the future.
Established Artist Yumi Umiumare teaches her acclaimed masterclass in Butoh alongside new methods of experiential art making for our times, developed alongside interdisciplinary artist and image-maker Vikk Shayen. Together they bring a combined half-century of practice.
Drawing on both traditional and contemporary methods, you are invited to explore new ways of being and to follow your own creative impulses and expression, discovering ways of being through the physical, poetic and philosophical worlds of Butoh and the art of seeing.
Across four days, Yumi Umiumare leads a deep exploration of the visible and invisible in Butoh, moving between inner and outer expression. She is joined by artist Vikk Shayen, who will lead a segment offering new ways of perception and how to see with your whole body. These are methods are designed to stay with you long after the workshop ends.
Who the workshop is for
The workshop is open to people of all levels of experience and artistic disciplines. Physical movement in the studio and outside make up the core of the workshop but no prior knowledge or skills are necessary to participate.
About the Residency
Staying on the land is part of the practice where we let nature set the pace - morning walks through ancient trees, training in the day outside and in the studio, campfires at night and sleeping under the stars.
The vegetarian food prepared onsite and eating as group is an integral part of the experience. Together we create a space to explore where movement, ritual and spirituality meet, fostering a deeper connection with ourselves, each other and the world around us.

OUT OF ORDER
Shall we dance?!

◉ From Yumi Umiumare ◉
The word “Ban Kuruwase (Out of Order)” may sound like a collapse of order — chaotic and a little frightening. But it is not.
When we accept, celebrate, and enjoy the “beauty of order turned upside down,” a mysterious sense of freedom is born.
In this modern age of information overload and confusion, why not deliberately dive into a state where “order has collapsed” — into chaos itself — and accept it as it is?
Why not dance in ways that defy conventional harmony?
In English, “OUT OF ORDER” means “out of service,” the sign you see on broken lockers or toilets.
I myself have had to dance several times when I was in a “broken” state or ill. Paradoxically, it was at those times that all unnecessary tension disappeared and true expression emerged — and audiences told me it was wonderful.
Let us shine light on our own slightly “broken” parts. Through the medium of Butoh, which transcends common sense, let us shake our hearts and bodies.
Let us release the catharsis that gushes from the source of existence,
the primal roar from the depths of the soul,
and unleash our “inner monsters.”
Let us resonate with the original voice from the gut,
dive into the chaos,
and join the cosmic dance!
Why not experience true freedom while screaming together with the inner monsters set free through Butoh?
OUT OF ORDER —
◉ From Organizer Am∞mA◉
Seventeen years ago in Sydney, I saw Yumi’s shocking performance. Since then, I had been longing to organise her Butoh camp in Japan — and last year it finally happened at Iwate Taiyosha.
Crawling on all fours like wild beasts through mountains and fields,
Rolling down hills like pill bugs,
Digging holes and burying ourselves back into the earth,
Then dancing a Requiem to breathe life back into the dead —
That experience was truly priceless. It is one of the greatest treasures of my life.
When was the last time I played with the earth like that?
Covered in mud, naked, screaming, laughing and crying loudly,
plunging into freezing stream water,
shaking with my whole being as I truly felt alive.
I even wondered if I had ever done this as a child.
In modern society, the wildness inside us has been controlled and sealed away since childhood. It is almost never welcomed to open.
That is why, with our free will and choice, let us challenge this conditioned “programming,” reconnect with our life force energy, revive our souls, and remember the purity of the heart.
Shall we dance?!
Bring a playful spirit and curiosity in your pocket, and an empty mind. Let’s dance together!

This weekly workshop (6 sessions in total) trains the body through the transformative philosophy of classic and contemporary Butoh. Melbourne-based Butoh punkess Yumi Umiumare leads physical and imaginal practices that shake the body awake, activate space, disrupt habitual thinking, and push imagery across physical and metaphysical territories.
Originally known as the “Dance of Darkness,” Butoh is layered, contradictory, and unruly. The body becomes a site of transformation, between the known and the unknown, the real and the unreal, the visible and the invisible. We are playfully venturing into realms of disturbance, the grotesque, beauty, and darkness.
Enter the mysterious, unsettling, and strangely liberating world of Butoh!

Butoh- Through magic & Mystery
Step into the mystery of Butoh, Japan’s subversive dance form, through 4days of movement, ritual, and transformation!
This popular annual residential workshop returns, inviting participants to discover their own creative expression and mystery through the physical and philosophical approach of Butoh—a Japanese contemporary and subversive dance form.
Over four days, Yumi will introduce both practical and ‘mysterious’ methods of Butoh, channeling our internal and external creative expression. The stillness and wildness of the landscape will enable us to explore our deeper, authentic "being," and to cleanse our busy thoughts.
Just over 1.5 hours from Melbourne, Arisaig Wellness Retreat is nestled in Yandoit, near Castlemaine. Set on 100 acres of serene bushland, surrounded by stunning Australian native flora, it offers hidden corners and quiet spaces that create the perfect refuge. The beautiful studio, designed to capture an abundance of natural light, provides uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness.
Through sharing food and gentle conversation, participants can explore a consciousness of well-being, as well as the essence of ‘personal ritual’—through breathing, walking, moving, and even occasional screaming and laughter. The workshop allows you to explore the intersection of movement, ritual, and spirituality—fostering a deeper connection to yourself, to others, and to the world around you.
Originally called the “Dance of Darkness,” 舞踏 Butoh contains many layers of practice and philosophy. Yumi believes it exists beyond duality—where darkness and light are not fixed states, and one always contains the seeds of the other. Through the magic and mystery of Butoh, ‘beauty’ can be ugly, and ‘ugly’ can be beautiful. Broken things can become catalysts for transformation.
Yumi is renowned for combining Butoh (the darkness) with lightness and humour, embracing a holistic humanity.
THE WORKSHOP IS OPEN TO ALL LEVEL OF EXPERIENCES AND ARTISTIC DISCIPLINES!

”When I dance, I try to become one with the light, but I also know that the shadow is always with me.”
Kazuo Ohno
(Butoh dancer who continued performing into his 100s)
Following last year’s popular weekend workshop at Dancehouse, Yumi Umiumare returns to guide participants in discovering their own ‘creative gateway’ through the physical and philosophical approach of Butoh—a Japanese contemporary and subversive dance form.
Originally called the “Dance of Darkness,” Butoh contains many layers of practice and philosophy. Yumi believes it exists beyond duality—where darkness and light are not fixed states, and one always contains the seeds of the other. ‘Beauty’ can be ugly, and ‘ugly’ can be beautiful. Broken things can become new catalysts for transformation.
Over the weekend, Yumi will guide participants through 10 focused points and introduce historical, classical, holistic, and contemporary approaches to Butoh, while also sharing insights from her diverse practice.
This workshop is suited for those wanting to reflect on an existing piece, create new movement phrases, or simply dive into the ocean of Butoh.
The workshop welcomes both experienced practitioners and those new to the form.
You are able to attend only the ‘lecture: what is Butoh” on Friday 27 June, from 6pm.
(The workshop price includes the lecture.)

[BOOKED OUT!]
Friday 17 to Sunday 19 January 2025

CDT is excited to have made a connection with Butoh Artist Yumi Umiumare, and to announce that Yumi is coming to Canberra next January to offer a weekend workshop at CDT.
Over the weekend, Yumi Umiumare will introduce her mastery of body awareness through Butoh, her deep passion for ritual inspired by the Japanese Tea Ceremony, and her recent exploration of Jujutsu (呪術) – a Japanese notion of Shamanism.
This unique workshop series invites participants to explore the intersection of movement, ritual, and spirituality, fostering a deeper connection to themselves, others, and the world around them.
Participants will be guided to explore:
Embodiment and Presence: Fully immerse yourself in the moment, expressing raw emotions and experiences through Butoh. Create simple rituals to enter sacred spaces with mindfulness and intention.
Symbolism and Ritual: Discover the rich symbolism and rituals of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, abstracted through contemporary Butoh styles, focusing on harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.
Mysteries and Magic: Delve into the mysteries of Jujutsu, exploring the spiritual connection between the visible and invisible worlds, where everyday life intersects with the sacred and the profane.
Transformation and Self-Expression: Experience catharsis through movement, ritual, and spiritual exploration, uncovering deep emotions and releasing tension.
Reintegrating these powers into the arts is central to Yumi’s creative practice, and this workshop offers participants a chance to share in that process.
This workshop is open to participants of all experience levels and artistic disciplines.

OUT of ORDER II
Weekly Training: Through Butoh and Beyond
This weekly workshop focuses on training the body through various techniques of performance art, including Butoh. A key element of Butoh is imagining the body as an ‘empty vessel’, which is filled and emptied with substances of all kinds then expressed through the body. The body is also the site of transformation between known to unknown, real and surreal, visible to invisible and even from beauty to the grotesque.
Channeling the interdisciplinary nature of Butoh, guest teachers will facilitate three diverse training methods each beginning with a Butoh warm-up: Willow J Conway (Cabaret) and Matt Crosby (Suzuki Method).
Butoh can be seen as an example of an art form that is out of order, and it challenges the norms of conventional performance styles and offers a way to explore new forms of expression and adaptation in the face of uncertain and unexpected challenges.
This workshop is open to all levels of experience and artistic discipline.

About
Yumi is conducting three workshops, weekly and weekend workshops, and also 3-nights residential workshop introducing her mastery skills of body awareness through Butoh, her ongoing passion for ritual and ceremony through elements of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and her recent focus on exploring Jujutsu 呪術 - a Japanese notion of Shamanism.
This unique workshop series allows participants to explore the intersection of movement, ritual, and spirituality ⏤ fostering a deeper connection to the self, others, and the world around.
By integrating Butoh, the Japanese tea ceremony, and spiritual concepts like Jujutsu, participants will delve into:
Embodiment and Presence: Immerse yourself fully in the moment, expressing raw emotions and experiences through Butoh while creating simple rituals to enter sacred spaces with mindfulness and intention.
Symbolism and Ritual: Explore rich symbolism and ritualistic elements, discovering the philosophy of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and its essence of harmony, respect, purity and tranquility, abstracted through contemporary Butoh styles.
Mysteries and Magic: Delve into the mysteries of Jujutsu, where everyday life intersects with the sacred and the profane, exploring the spiritual link between the visible and invisible worlds.
Transformation and Self-Expression: Experience catharsis through movement, ritual and spiritual exploration, uncovering deep emotions and releasing tension.
Reconnecting these powers into the arts is essential for Yumi’s creative practice, and this is a great opportunity for participants to share in that process.

3-NIGHTS RESIDENTIAL WORKSHOP: BUTOH, TEA/RITUAL & SPIRITUALITY
WHAT WE DO
Yumi is conducting 3-nights residential workshop introducing her mastery skills of body awareness through Butoh, her ongoing passion for ritual and ceremony through elements of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and her recent focus on exploring Jujutsu 呪術 - a Japanese notion of Shamanism.
This workshop is open to participants of all levels of experience and artistic discipline.
