今年は神奈川県藤野にて、豊かな里山の自然に触れながら
短く濃い１泊２日の合宿を行うことになりました。
今回は、世界を駆け回るゆみ・うみうまれが、ここ数年取り組んでいるテーマ「番狂わせ」 OUT OF ORDER！です。
ゆみが主宰するButohOUT!のメルボルン公演では、このテーマをもとに２作品を創作し、20名以上が出演、いずれもチケット完売の大好評を博しました。
今回はこのテーマに沿って、
カラダとアタマをやわらかくほぐし
ココロを解放させ
見えるものと見えないものに触れ
それを小さなカタチへと立ち上げていきます。

◉ゆみ・うみうまれより◉
「番狂わせ」と聞くと、秩序が崩れ、予測不能で少し恐ろしい世界のように感じるかもしれません。しかし実はそうではありません。
その“順番の狂った美しさ”を受け入れ、祝い、楽しむとき
不思議な自由さが生まれてきます。
例えば、情報過多による混乱に巻き込まれやすい今の時代、あえて「秩序が崩れた状態」やカオスの中へ飛び込み、それをそのまま受け入れてみませんか？
予定調和ではない表現で、踊ってみませんか？
英語で OUT OF ORDER は「故障中」を意味し、使えないロッカーやトイレなどにそのサインが掲示されています。
私自身も“故障中”のような状態や病気の時に、踊らなければならない経験が何度かありましたが、そんな時こそ不思議と力みが抜け、真の表現が生まれ、観客からも素晴らしかったと言われたことがあります。
私たち自身の少し“故障した部分”にも光を当て、常識にとらわれない舞踏という媒体を通して、ココロとカラダを震わせていきましょう。
存在の源からほとばしるカタルシスを、
たましいの底からの雄叫びを、
私たちの「内なるモンスター」を解き放ち
腹の底から原初の声を響かせ
混沌の中へ飛び込み
宇宙的なダンスへと加わりましょう！

17年前にシドニーでゆみねぇの衝撃的な舞台を観て以来
永らく待ち望んでいた日本での舞踏合宿が遂に去年
岩手・太陽舎で叶いました。
獣のように四つん這いになって野山を駆け回って
ダンゴムシのように丸まって丘を転げ回って
穴を掘って大地に埋まり還ってゆく者たちに
レクイエムのダンスを踊って生命の息吹を吹込み
死者を蘇らせた体験はまさにプライスレス！
私の人生のタカラモノになっています。
いつだっただろう、こうして大地と戯れたのは？
泥まみれになって裸で叫び、大声で泣き笑い
凍るような沢水に浸かり
身を震わせながら生きている心地を全身全霊で感じたのは。
子どもの頃でさえ無かったかも、とふと思った。
この現代社会において私たちの内に眠る野生は
小さな頃から管理され封じ込まれて
開くことを歓迎されていない。
だからこそ自由意志と選択を持って
その条件付けられた「プログラミング」に挑んでいく
自らの生命力と繋がって魂を蘇生させていく
ハートの純粋性を思い出していく
そんなプロセスを楽しんでみませんか？

【アーティスト・プロフィール】
ゆみうみうまれ
兵庫県宝塚市出身、神戸大学教育学部卒 オーストラリア・メルボルン在住のゆみ・うみうまれは、ダンサー、アクター、ディレクター、振付家として活動。舞踏キャバレエ「DasSHOKU」プロジェクト、ButouOUT!フェスティバルを主宰する。1991年の大駱駝艦メルボルン公演への参加を機に1993年に移住。以来、オーストラリアをはじめ、日本、東南アジア、ヨーロッパ各地で公演やワークショップを重ねる。文化的アイデンティティや社会問題を鋭く捉えつつ、ユーモアを交えた独自のスタイルは国内外で高く評価され、オーストラリア・グリーンルーム賞を多数受賞。2024年には「LIVING LEGEND生ける伝説」メルボルン・フリンジ・フェスティバル賞も受賞した。
アボリジニー文化を含む豪州文化と日本文化の交流演劇作品創作にも尽力するなど、日豪国際交流の担い手でもある。振付家としては「生きることはダンスそのもの」「誰でもダンス！」を提唱し、多国籍難民、身体障害者、社会的に困難な状況にある人々、舞台経験のない人々との演劇制作にも多数関わる。「踊り」「お茶」「スピリット」を活動の三本柱とし、舞踏にとどまらない幅広い表現を追求している。www.yumi.com.au

Following last year’s highly acclaimed Butoh residential WS at Iwate Taiyosha, this year we will hold a short but intensive 1-night, 2-day camp in Fujino, Kanagawa, surrounded by the rich nature of the satoyama (rural mountain landscape).
This time, the theme is “OUT OF ORDER!”, which Yumi Umiumare has been exploring for the past several years.
At the Melbourne performance of ButohOUT!, the company founded by Yumi, two works based on this theme were created with over 20 performers. Both shows sold out and received great acclaim.
Following this theme, we will:
- Gently loosen the body and mind
- Liberate the heart
- Touch both the visible and the invisible
- And shape them into small forms
Everyone is warmly welcome — no dance experience necessary! ALL WELCOME!

The word “Ban Kuruwase (Out of Order)” may sound like a collapse of order — chaotic and a little frightening. But it is not.
When we accept, celebrate, and enjoy the “beauty of order turned upside down,” a mysterious sense of freedom is born.
In this modern age of information overload and confusion, why not deliberately dive into a state where “order has collapsed” — into chaos itself — and accept it as it is?
Why not dance in ways that defy conventional harmony?
In English, “OUT OF ORDER” means “out of service,” the sign you see on broken lockers or toilets.
I myself have had to dance several times when I was in a “broken” state or ill. Paradoxically, it was at those times that all unnecessary tension disappeared and true expression emerged — and audiences told me it was wonderful.
Let us shine light on our own slightly “broken” parts. Through the medium of Butoh, which transcends common sense, let us shake our hearts and bodies.
Let us release the catharsis that gushes from the source of existence,
the primal roar from the depths of the soul,
and unleash our “inner monsters.”
Let us resonate with the original voice from the gut,
dive into the chaos,
and join the cosmic dance!

Seventeen years ago in Sydney, I saw Yumi’s shocking performance. Since then, I had been longing to organise her Butoh camp in Japan — and last year it finally happened at Iwate Taiyosha.
Crawling on all fours like wild beasts through mountains and fields,
Rolling down hills like pill bugs,
Digging holes and burying ourselves back into the earth,
Then dancing a Requiem to breathe life back into the dead —
That experience was truly priceless. It is one of the greatest treasures of my life.
When was the last time I played with the earth like that?
Covered in mud, naked, screaming, laughing and crying loudly,
plunging into freezing stream water,
shaking with my whole being as I truly felt alive.
I even wondered if I had ever done this as a child.
In modern society, the wildness inside us has been controlled and sealed away since childhood. It is almost never welcomed to open.
That is why, with our free will and choice, let us challenge this conditioned “programming,” reconnect with our life force energy, revive our souls, and remember the purity of the heart.
Shall we dance?!

[Artist Profile]
Yumi Umiumare
Born in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from Kobe University Faculty of Education. Yumi Umiumare is a dancer, actor, director, and choreographer based in Melbourne, Australia. She is the founder and director of the Butoh Cabaret project “DasSHOKU” and the ButohOUT! Festival.
She participated in the 1991 Melbourne performance by Dairakudakan, which led her to move to Australia in 1993. Since then, she has performed and taught workshops across Australia, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Her unique style, which sharply captures cultural identity and social issues while incorporating humor, has earned high acclaim both domestically and internationally. She has received numerous Green Room Awards in Australia and, in 2024, the “LIVING LEGEND” Melbourne Fringe Festival Award.
She is also actively involved in creating theatrical works that promote cultural exchange between Australia (including Aboriginal culture) and Japan. As a choreographer, she advocates “Life itself is dance” and “Anyone can dance!” and has worked extensively with multicultural refugees, people with disabilities, those in difficult social situations, and people with no prior stage experience. Her three pillars of activity are “Dance,” “Tea,” and “Spirit.” She continues to pursue a wide range of expression beyond Butoh.

I am still in awe, to think about this performance, I've done in Japan, as a part of annual performance season with Tenri University Dance club, at the Nara Centennial Hall, December 2024.
The title: 'あめつちの聲〜 in the middle of the awe'
あめつち（AME TSUCHI): Heaven and Earth
聲(KOE) : Voice
It was a grand stage featuring a total of 22 dancers and 15 musicians from Tenri University's Dance Club and Gagaku Club, both of which are among the top-level university groups in Japan. Adding to this luxurious setup, my brother, who is a successful pro Sumie artist, was in charge of the projection visuals.
Gagaku, which is recognised by UNESCO as the world’s oldest continuously performed orchestral music, historically used as imperial court music, has a history spanning over a thousand years!
It was epic and so powerful to tap into my DNA and heritage of my spiritual ancestry (and beyond)..and I am still beyond the words..it will come and take a place sometime.

去年、年末に天理大学単独公演に参加し、
あめつちの聲〜 in the middle of the awe'
という作品を発表させていただきました。
この舞台を思い出すと、今でもドキドキ、そしてAwe (畏敬の念）の気持ちにかられます。
天理大のダンス部と雅楽部という、双方とも日本でも屈指のレベルに入る大学生の方達の、総勢・踊り手２２人、奏者１５人という、大きな舞台に、私の弟でプロで成功している土屋秋恆がプロジェクターでの画像を手がけるという贅沢な設定でした。
雅楽は１０００年以上もの歴史を誇り、ユネスコでも世界で一番古いオーケストラと位置付けられているそうです。
私の中のDNAや血がさわぎ、古代に身を馳せていったような、なんとも言えない深い感動を味あわせていただきました。まだ言葉にすることができませんが、そのうちに、どこからか、ジワジワと、言葉や踊りが滲み出てくるように感じております。
この舞台作りに関わっていただいた天理大の教授塚本順子先生、雅楽部の最高顧問佐藤浩司先生をはじめとする、たくさんの方々に心から感謝します！

ゆみうみうまれは、日本・奈良の天理大学創作ダンス部の創立５５周年、２０回目の記念イベントにおいて、振付とパフォーマンスを行う素晴らしい機会を得ました。同部は、そのダンスの高いクオリティと創造性によって数々の賞を受賞していることで知られています。うみうまれはiは12月に2週間奈良に滞在し、22人のダンサーと18人の雅楽演奏者と共に作品を創り上げ、1500人の観客を迎える奈良100年会館の大舞台で披露します！
雅楽は、歴史的に皇室の宮廷音楽として使用され、千年以上の歴史を持っています。

"Western dance begins with its feet firmly planted on the ground, whereas Butoh begins with a dance wherein the dancer tries in vain to find their feet." - Tatsumi Hijikata
Butoh can be mysterious, abstract, and esoteric, yet it can also serve as a creative gateway, catalyst, and even lead to unexpected breakthroughs. Over the weekend, Yumi leads participants through 10 focused points(as below), guiding them to explore the physical and philosophical dimensions of Butoh from both classical and contemporary perspectives.
The workshop is welcoming both experienced practitioners and those new to the practice.

Yumi is conducting three workshops, weekly and weekend workshops, and also 3-nights residential workshop introducing her mastery skills of body awareness through Butoh, her ongoing passion for ritual and ceremony through elements of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and her recent focus on exploring Jujutsu 呪術 - a Japanese notion of Shamanism.

Originally named ‘Dance of Darkness’, Butoh challenges conventional performance styles and offers participants a unique opportunity to explore their embodiment and presence. 天理大学創作ダンス部 第19回単独公演 「結」— 想いをつなぐ—
天理大学創作ダンス部は、1969（昭和44）年創作舞踊同好会として発足。84年部に昇格。夏の全国大会やコンクール、単独公演など様々な舞台に向けて、個性豊かな作品創りをめざしている。その実績はこの数年めざましく、今夏の全日本高校・大学ダンスフェスティバルにおいて、特別賞を受賞した。

Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI is an intimate and epic solo performance piece. It is a fusion of dance, text, and song, underscored by dynamic visual elements, a compelling original musical score, and of course – a tea ceremony.
Drawing inspiration from the historical Japanese female entertainer, Izumo no Okuni, initiator of Kabuki theatre in early 1600s Japan, Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI is a visceral adventure – a transcendent feast for the senses.
At the height of her creative prowess, Yumi Umiumare, Australia’s leading Butoh artist, unearths precious sacred female powers all too often buried throughout history. Yumi’s channelling of the multifaceted Okuni (who was so powerful, yet fragile and complex) culminates in a powerhouse solo performance that refuses to be defined by genre. Furious, funny, wistful, strange, and wild. Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI will carry you on a bizarre, unruly and heartfelt journey as only Yumi Umiumare can.

This is unique residential workshop, exploring movement, text and voice, through 呪術 Jujutsu, Japanese notion of shamanism, translated as ‘Magic’ at the stunning beach location in Venus Bay, Gippsland.
Melbourne based performance artist Yumi Umiumare is facilitating the workshop, with her international collaborators from Japan, Kayo Tamura (A shaman in theatre!) and Kyoko Amara (professional clairvoyant/singer). The intention of the event is to open up new possibilities of interweaving between arts, nature and spirituality.
Over the 5 days, this ‘magic triangle’ of three artists, will introduce various exercises to guide the participants to open their ‘creative portal’ in order to;
Access your inner, deep sources of creativity
Extract individual and authentic expressions
Find ways of expressing with movement, word, voice and sound
The exercises includes;
Movement : ‘what comes from within’ from Butoh method (Yumi)
Text: ‘Authentic self-portrait series’ from drama technique (Kayo)
Guided meditation to find out own ‘power animal’ from shamanism method (Kyoko)
The stillness and wildness of the landscape enables us to explore our deeper and authentic "being" and helps to cleanse our busy thoughts. Through sharing food and gentle conversation, these powerful female artists will lead participants to explore their consciousness of well-being, essence of ‘personal ritual’ from breathing, walking, moving, and occasional screaming and laughter.
2 hours from Melbourne, the Raven’s Nest retreat space is located in Venus Bay on 14 acres of waterfront, forested sanctuary in South Gippsland. The 2 storey house has sunrise to sunset views, large yurt, massive deck spaces, outdoor dance floors and camping areas, private walking tracks & national park access.

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL GUEST ARTISTS
Kayo Tamura is an accomplished performance artist who fearlessly blazes her own trail with a strong background in theory, performance, writing, and directing. Kayo is a founder and artistic director of the GUMBO Theatre Group in Osaka since 1994. The company has performed in Edinburgh, Australia, Asia and North America and has won numerous awards. In 2022, they successfully completed a six-month tour of North America and won seven awards. Kayo is a Hong Kong Fringe Club Honorary Member (2015–), Asian Youth Theatre Festival Japan Team Advisor (2018–), Kamikoma Cats Artistic Director (2017–), Sakai International Community Arts Artistic Director (2019–).
Kyoko Amara loves the scent of the soul. She is a “channeller” or clairvoyant in Japan who has held sessions with over 9000 people. Over 20 years, she has been working as a singer with shamanistic drumming. Her main work is to spiritually convey the roots of people’s souls. She has also been engaged in art and shamanistic activities through Butoh performance, painting female genitals, holding workshops for feminine liberation and ceremonies. In 2017, Kyoko moved from Tokyo to the foot of Mt. Hayachine in northern Japan to organise events in a 100-year-old folk house, "Ihatov Mountain and Water Sunshade”.

Entangling old world Kabuki mystique with volumetric 3D video, “IN-VOCATION たまおこし” summons the sacred power of female archetypes and deities.
In collaboration with a clairvoyant from Japan, local artists, and an international guest performer, Yumi Umiumare opens a Jujutsu 呪術 (Magic) portal to discover the colourful characters of OKUNI — an initiator of Kabuki Japanese theatre.
Evolving out of Yumi’s solo work, “Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI”, the team of mystics return to prod their collective memories and discover the many essences of the divine feminine.

The ‘magic triangle’ from Japan offers a creative solution through Butoh and Beyond!
Over the weekend, the three artists will introduce their creative methods, through various exercises of Butoh, voice, drama and unique styles of performance making. They will guide the participants to open their ‘creative portal’ thus becoming a ‘medium’ for their own expression. In Japanese, the character of ‘actor’ is written as ‘俳優’ which literally means ‘non-human excellence'. We can all experience this extraordinary state of excellence bordering on the 'non-human' through moving, singing, acting and just being our natural selves.

Once payment has been received via Trybooking, any cancellations must be made in writing to here.
1) Cancellations made in writing 4 weeks prior to the commencement of a Workshop will receive a 100% refund with the deduction of the Trybooking handling fee.
2) Cancellations made in writing 2 weeks prior to the commencement of a Workshop will receive a 50% refund.
3) Cancellations made less than 2 weeks before the commencement of Workshop or no-show will receive no refund.

Butoh舞踏,originally called Ankoku Butoh (Dance of Darkness), was conceived in Japan during the late 50’s and early 60’s during the social turmoil after the war and sought to find an expression through dance. Rather than aspiring to an aesthetic ideal, the dance attempts to expose the joys and sorrows of life, exploring the most fundamental elements of physical and psychological existence. Yumi is renown for combining Butoh (the darkness) with lightness and a sense of humour to embrace a wholistic humanity.
