Step into the mystery of Butoh, Japan’s subversive dance form, through 4 days of movement, ritual, and transformation!
Buried TeaBowl -OKUNI is an intimate and epic solo performance installation bringing together dance, text, song and tea ceremony. The work was premiered in May 2022 with sold out season and now ready for touring around the globe!
Jujutsu Project is a research project by Yumi Umiumare, exploring Jujutsu, the Japanese notion of shamanism. Yumi works with three artists and five specialists, including a first nations artist, a celebrant, scientists, a veterinarian/animal communicator and artists from diverse backgrounds in Australia, Japan & USA via online and live meetings.

Yumi will be performing in 月を見る夜 Moongazing in February 2026 at La Mama Theatre.
月を見る夜 Moongazing was previously developed as part of Antipodes Theatre Company's 2025 Winter Lab and received a 2025 La Mama Residency. This project is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants, the Hansen Little Foundation and VCA Foundation, and The Ian Potter Cultural Trust. Book Here →

3.5 weeks in Europe, 2 weeks in America, 2 weeks in Western expedition just finished!! 12 plane rides in 7 weeks or so today since I left Melbourne!
Started with a shamanism training camp in Iwate, followed by a dance lab camp in Romania, workshops in England, travelling around Slovakia and Poland, and finally the Salish Sea Butoh Festival near Seattle, USA.

I'm currently performing at Melbourne’s RISING Festival, working with stunning Japanese artist Saeborg, and yes… every night I become a dog. Literally.
Thurs 5th June to Sunday 15th June, from 5pm to 12pm, Howey Place, Melbourne CBD.
(Howey Place, a shopping mall at 234 Collins Street which runs through to Collins Street, as well forming an "L" shape toward the back of the Capitol Arcade which connects it with Swanston Street.)
